What a flurry of activity to wrap up the fiscal year last month, as we closed on several properties! Nine happy new owners signed on the dotted line and took possession of the keys to their new Habitat homes. We welcome Kadejya, Avis, Shalea, Channteria, Marlon & Jackie, Natalie, Alexis, Yudiel & Derlin, and Ashleigh to the Miami Habitat family! We are hitting the ground running for Fiscal 2022-2023 and ready to help many new families make their way to affordable homeownership. A Father's Day SpotlightLast month we highlighted two fantastic moms in the Habitat program. This month we'd like to send a shout-out not only to a great homeowner dad, but who also happens to be one of our awesome Habitat construction supervisors. Wayne Essue came to us in 2016 as a single father looking for a home in which to raise his two girls. When he started his sweat equity, we realized he was a phenomenal worker and offered him a position with our construction department. We couldn't be feel more blessed to have found Wayne and were happy to celebrate his 5th anniversary on staff in August 2021. Our Volunteers Are The Best! This month we highlight Sally Baron, a true stalwart of the Miami Habitat family that we are very grateful for.
Sally first volunteered with us as part of her church group during a Blitz Build in the late 90's. She kept coming back for several years and then as retirement approached, she identified 3 organizations that she felt were having a positive impact in the community. We are very grateful to have made that cut! Now, more two decades later, she says her work Habitat helps keep her a "happy professional retiree"! Although she feels her best productivity now is helping us in office-related projects.....she can't miss a Blitz because......DONUTS! which she doesn't normally eat. Well, Sally, whatever we can do to keep you coming back, we are on it. Thank you for your many years of dedication to our affordable homeownership work, and we hope to see you in between your travel adventures! Single mothers continue to make up the largest percentage of Miami Habitat's constituency, and we are ever inspired by their dedication, tireless work, and advocacy on behalf of their children as they make their way to homeownership. Moms like Diamond and Avis, who will very soon be moving into their new homes that were completed during this year's Blitz Build in February. Click on the videos to hear them speak about their Habitat journey so far.
As we've said many times, Blitz Build is a time when we get to see a lot of familiar faces - and Al Harano of the Motley Crew is one of our faves. A few days past his retirement in 2005, Al started volunteering with Habitat in Louisiana in the wake of Hurricane Katrina's devastation. It was there he met PJ Riner (previously spotlighted in this column), and in 2010 he asked Al if working at a Miami Blitz with a group of fellow travelers was something he'd be interested in. The rest, as they say, is history! That first trip to Miami was when the Kermit mascot came to be, and we love seeing the collection grow every year. Al says he continues to stay engaged with Habitat because there are still too many people in need of homeownership at a price they can afford; and he realizes how lucky he is when he sees the struggles of families trying to get by. Al tells us his favorite Miami memory is the completion of Habitat Landings, and his favorite Blitz activity is the Motley's end-of-day "safety meeting" at a pub of their choice! Thank you Al, on behalf of all the Habitat families across the country that you have helped to achieve their dreams. We can't wait to see you and the Crew at Blitz 2023!! Last month, we were blessed to have two new owners close on their Habitat Homes! Congrats, BenishiaWay to go, Tawanda! |
