Karen Holmes is the first Miami Habitat for Humanity homeowner to pay off the mortgage on her home. Twelve years after building her home in partnership with Habitat volunteers, Ms. Holmes now owns her home free and clear. Ms. Holmes states, “It was a long and hard struggle, but it is a relief knowing that I finally have somewhere to call my very own home. I want to thank God for the program that He brought to South Florida that helped me in my time of need. I am very happy and proud that I made it to this day!” Ms. Holmes celebrated with her family, church and community members, as well as with Habitat volunteers and staff on Saturday, September 14, 2002. Past featured homeowners: Ilyia Williams - "Always remember that there are people out there who won’t give up on you." Charline Cannady - "I am so excited that I am becoming a homeowner."
