Women build Habitat home
LIBERTY CITY, Fla. (WSVN) -- A group of South Florida women joined forces to build a new home for a deserving family.
The volunteers built the home as part of the sixth annual Habitat for Humanity's Women Build Program.

| Over the past four years, the Belton family has experienced moments of profound sadness and exhilarating joy.
One of the happiest moments was on May 3, 2012, when the family of eight moved into their new Habitat for Humanity home in the Liberty City community of Miami, Fla. “Move-in day was exciting,” said Lakevia Belton, 31, who heads the close-knit household. “We did it rapidly, because we were just ecstatic to get from there to here.” |

Over the years, there have been many stories written in this newspaper on many failed programs intended to help the residents of Liberty City. Dating as far back as the 1980s, after the McDuffie riots, there have been many examples of perplexing government spending. While there are sadly too many examples to mention of public dollars that missed the mark, there are also some shining instances of efforts that have met or even surpassed their intended goals.
On Friday, November 18 2011, The Miami HEAT teamed up with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami, to help build affordable homes for low-income families in Liberty City.

"I'm overwhelmed and I'm just happy," said Italia Smith.

Habitat is finishing three houses next to each other in Liberty City. Their wonderful volunteers were there among some exciting, funny and hard working actors from Days of our Lives, Telemundo & mun2.
At the start of February, I was invited to get behind the wheel of the all-new 2012 Nissan NV (Nissan Van) out in Miami. The Nissan NV is the automaker's first commercial vehicle launched in the U.S., although it has a more than seven-decade history of producing commercial vehicles in the global market (starting in 1937 in Japan). I had the opportunity to drive the Standard and High Roof models, as well as test versions with the V-6 and V-8 engines.
Actors from Days Of Our Lives will be joining onscreen personalities from cable networks Telemundo and mun2 to take part in a building project with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami.
The money will go towards revitalizing Liberty City and create home ownership opportunities for low income families. "Our main priority is not just to build homes but to build communities, so with the help of our sponsors at Chase, we are shinning a light on a community," said Habitat for Humanity CEO Mario Artecona.
