Opa-locka mayor hopeful for future growth
After a ceremony that included musicians and singers, Opa-locka Mayor Myra Taylor was welcomed by a cheering crowd as she walked to the stage Jan. 28 in downtown Opa-locka.
During her first state of the city address since regaining the mayor’s seat last year, Taylor encouraged residents and politicians to work together as a community in order to renovate Magnolia North, the historical downtown area and 22nd Avenue.
“We got together, placed the demands on our potential and along came the image of a train,” she said. “It’s the Opa-locka express; it’s moving to carry us to new destinations where Opa-locka has never gone before.”
Taylor said that thanks to the efforts of County Commissioner Barbara Jordan, Habitat for Humanity and the Opa-locka Community Development Corporation, Magnolia North is being transformed into an attractive neighborhood.
