MIAMI, FL – December 1, 2010 – Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami and the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami ReStore will dedicate the home of Tomika Jackson on Saturday, December 4th at 12 noon. Ms. Jackson’s home, as a Women Build home, was built exclusively by female volunteers. The dedication ceremony will take place at 7138 NW 20th Avenue (the new Jackson Family home) in the Liberty City neighborhood of Miami. Ms. Jackson and her two children will receive the keys to their new house along with a personalized heirloom Bible. Developed by Habitat for Humanity International, Women Build is a volunteer program that aims to recruit, educate and nurture women to build—and advocate for—simple, decent and affordable houses. Each year, thousands of women across the country – including many in Miami-Dade County – participate in Women Builds. This is the second Women Build Miami Habitat has launched this year. The goal for the program is to build two houses in Liberty City per year for the next five years; the Jackson family home is the third of the projected ten homes. Stephanie Sylvestre, volunteer coordinator for the Women Build events, is “moved to tears when I think of the people who have helped complete the third build.” ”So I would like to give thanks,” she continues, “to everyone who came to build, who brought friends to build, who sent words of encouragements, and who contributed to making Liberty City a better place.” The four-month endeavor is sponsored by the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami ReStore, an open-to-the-public retail outlet that sells new and gently used donated home goods, appliances and furniture, and redirects the proceeds from those sales into Miami Habitat’s construction activities, helping sustain its mission of creating home ownership opportunities for low income families in the Miami-Dade community.
