Maxine Bryan celebrated her birthday just before the holidays, but Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami is celebrating her service for an entire month. Maxine is January’s featured volunteer.
A gifted singer and a diligent student, Maxine manages to dedicate four days a week to help in Miami Habitat’s office. She performs clerical duties for the development, volunteer and accounting departments, generally helping in any way she can.
Maxine also performs – literally. She sang at last year’s Synagogue Sunday, captivating the volunteers with a rendition of “On My Knees” during the lunch break, and at the Baptist three-home dedication in December. She describes herself as a rhythm and blues singer, but she lifts her voice to the Lord in a beautiful way.
The aspiring paralegal has also pitched in around the warehouse and served as a house host during Faith Day, where she organized lunch and made sure all the volunteers were comfortable and hydrated.
Maxine started volunteering a little over a year ago, having heard about Habitat from a friend. She researched the Miami affiliate, and then placed a call to the volunteer department. “I wanted something where I could help others,” she says.
That first call led her to volunteer during the 2010 Blitz Build, working on site. She did more hands-on construction as part of Liberty City Shine, and then found a steadier volunteer schedule in the office. To a person, every Miami Habitat staffer describes Maxine as a tireless worker with a fantastic attitude.
For her part, Maxine enjoys the time she spends in service. “I feel like I’m part of a family,” she says.
She certainly is. Congratulations to Maxine Bryan, January’s Featured Volunteer.
