Featured VolunteerBuck Isenberg Buck Isenberg began his volunteer experience with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami in 1997. He lives part of the year in Canada and the other half in Miami. He’s been a faithful volunteer since ‘97. Buck was drawn to Habitat for Humanity because in his decision to give of his time to a charitable organization, he realized that Habitat for Humanity was an organization with a plan that worked. He had already spent most of his life volunteering for various other organizations, but he had never been able to see the results of his work, like he does with Habitat. Buck says that Habitat for Humanity has the “permanency and continuance of the gift of time. There’s a long-term benefit- the opportunity for homeownership to those in need.” In addition to his love for the cause of Habitat for Humanity, he also loves the carpentry. “I’ve really built houses backwards. The first couple of times I volunteered, I did finish- painting on the inside of the house. The very next week, I was digging holes for the foundation of a new house. I’ve literally done everything except the trades, like plumbing, electric work, etc. Plus, Habitat for Humanity is also fun and great exercise.” Buck shares that he has met some truly wonderful people during his five years of volunteer service to Habitat for Humanity. “Most of the volunteers want to be there. There are a couple of kids that will come simply to complete their community service hours, but for the most part every volunteer is there because they want to be.” Likewise, Buck believes it is important for others to volunteer. “We should all volunteer simply because of our purely selfish points of view. We too often only think of ourselves. This opportunity really does offer a feel good activity because you see the product of your labor and its permanent. You can go back years later and say, “I helped build that.” “Also, we are all willing to help, it is just that sometimes you have to push the right buttons,” Buck adds. “However, the best reward from volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, is the opportunity to meet the homeowners. It’s a real eye-opening experience.” Past featured volunteers: Millagro Cuevas and Luvy Rivas - 2004 Blitz Build volunteers |
