For Raven, a mom of four and a hardworking café manager, owning a home was not a sudden decision. It was something she prepared for over several years. “This wasn’t something I just woke up and did,” she says. “It was like two, three years of preparing…I knew I wanna have something that I can have for my kids.” Her enthusiasm is contagious; from the moment she found out she was selected for a Habitat home to the day she finally opened the door to her kids’ very own rooms. The kids have been calling it “the blue house” for months now, blue being Raven’s favorite color. “When I saw the house, I was like, this has to be my house.” She kept the signing day a secret from her children. They knew about the house but did not know when it was going to become theirs. “I wanted everything ready for them first, their rooms decorated in the colors they like.” Every Sunday after church, the kids would ask, “Can we go to the blue house?” And Raven would smile and say, “Not yet, not yet.” Now, that “not yet” has turned into a happy “now.” There’s no limit to what you can do. If you have to start over 100 times, just do it 100 times. But don’t ever give up. Raven’s years of nonstop work since she was 16 years old have finally paid off. While she loved living with her grandma, the neighborhood was too busy and hectic, making it unsafe for her kids to play outside, and the space for her growing kids was getting small. The blue house is just far enough away, giving her children space and security but still close to her family, and grandma. Everything fell into place exactly as it was meant to be. To other moms and future applicants, Raven’s advice is clear: “Make sure you have everything lined up before you even start the process. Get it done first, and then go for it.” “If you get told no, try again. There’s always a time frame for when you can start. There’s no limit to what you can do. If you have to start over 100 times, just do it 100 times. But don’t ever give up.” She hopes her kids take away from this experience the most important lesson: “Anything is possible. Nothing is ever too hard.” The blue house is not just a house. It is the home where dreams have finally come true. Now, you can share with them the happiness, one of the most joyful moments of Raven’s journey, watching her daughters see their rooms for the very first time.
