FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Miami, FL (March 20, 2026) – On March 7, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami dedicated the first building at Habitat Acres, the future 150-townhome community that represents Miami Habitat’s boldest response to the growing need for affordable homeownership in the city.
At the center of the celebration were the future homeowners of the first eight townhomes, including Shanteria and her mother Rhonda, whose home is sponsored by Publix Charities.
For Shanteria, the opportunity to become a homeowner at 23 is a milestone she does not take for granted. “I’m very happy to have the opportunity at my age because I know not many people have that opportunity,” she said.
For Rhonda, a single mother who has raised her children largely on her own, the home represents stability and the ability to provide a stronger foundation for her family. “It means a lot to be able to provide for my kids,” she shared.
Publix Charities’ $300,000 sponsorship of Shanteria and Rhonda’s home marks the company’s 30th Habitat home with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami, reflecting a long-standing commitment to supporting families and strengthening communities across South Florida.
Publix Charities is part of a group of eight organizations that came together to sponsor the first building at Habitat Acres, helping launch the neighborhood and the future it will create for local families.
“Publix Charities has been an extraordinary partner for years,” said Mario Artecona, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami. “Their continued investment in affordable homeownership is helping families like Shanteria and Rhonda build stability and opportunity for the future.”
“We believe every family deserves a safe, stable place to call home. We are honored to support Habitat for Humanity and proud to continue partnering with them in their mission to help expand access to affordable homeownership for families in our communities,” said John Doran, Executive Director of Publix Super Markets Charities.
When completed, Habitat Acres will include 150 townhomes, creating a new community and expanding access to affordable homeownership for families across Miami-Dade County.
